Peony is known as ‘the King of Flower’ being a symbol of wealth and prosperity in Korea.

In Joseon Dynasty only the royal palace can possess peony paintings but spread among the nobles later on. Commoners could borrow the painting from the palace or local noble families only for the wedding ceremony once in a life time.

Painting of peonies (‘Morando’) has the meaning of ‘wishing wealth and prosperity’ which makes it popular choice for interior and gift for the loved ones.

 

모란은 꽃 중의 왕이라 하여 부와 귀, 남녀의 화합을 의미한다.

본래는 왕실에서만 사용하고 서민은 함부로 소장할 수 없었으나 평생에 단 한 번 혼례식 때에만 왕실이나 양반집에서 빌려서 사용할 수 있었다.

모란도는 ‘부와 귀를 있기를 바란다’는 소망을 담아 집안에 걸어 놓거나 귀한 이에게 선물한다.
