Moran Series are Joseon Dynasty Folk Art reproduced in reinterpreted colors. Paper dyed and painted in the traditional way with crafted pigments.
The blue bases shown in the painting are a kind of rocks called ‘Guesuk’ meaning ‘oddly shaped stone’ often shown in Korean Minhwa. They are so freely grown in various organic shapes that almost look like living creatures. They are valued as profound and mysterious objects offering meaning of prosperity and longevity in Korean paintings.
Extravagantly colored flowers also have their faces. They are boldly presenting their beauty with optimistic but somewhat aggressive smiles on them.
I spent the hottest summer of 2018 painting these flowers studying and experimenting with colors showered in pigment powders and natural glue smell.
The different lights and colors ended up in four seasons folding screen. The folding screen is mock-up image.
