동자도_Dong-ja-do

Minhwa_Dong-ja-do, 35 x 57cm, Color on Korean Paper, 2019

Dong-ja-do is a picture of young, little people. It was drawn to bless children in Joseon Dynasty.
The pictures are supposed to be playful and lively but to me, they looked like mysterious faries.
They have peculiar facial expressions that are hard to read and strange hair style. In Old Korea, for children had a long braided hair, the style in the painting seems to be imported from China.
These little people reminds me Mickey Mouse I used to watch on TV when I was little. I made their buns bigger like Mickey’s ears and put button patches on their clothes.
